- One morning we spotted a whale from our campsite!
- View from our tent (and Richard’s feet)
- Hiking trail follow the coastline for miles with long stretches of beach and open views
- Amazing to see these beautiful creatures moving in a herd
- Keeping a tight eye on us – and us on them
- We were warned not to get too close
- Waiting for mom and her young to move from trail
- When they decided to rest we were able to move on, very quickly
- No freeze-dried for us!
- Sunset from our campsite
Sinkyone Wilderness is on California’s Lost Coast, a remote area in northwest California. To visit the wilderness area campsites you access Sinkyone from Garberville along Hwy 101. Having a reliabile map from Garberville is necessary.
Once you come in contact with Sinkyone you will understand the magic of this remote area. The visitor center is an old ranch house that has been preserved, there are thirteen campsites located in protected areas in the northern part of the park and along the Lost Coast Trail. Most of the sites are located near creeks and offer easy access to secluded black sand beaches. These camp sites are the walk-in type meaning you carry your gear in.
A herd of Roosevelt Elk roam the park, they are magnificent creatures and a delight to view.
Most of the hikes are on the Lost Coast Trail which travels through this state park and detailed maps are available. We used the one published by Wilderness Press . . . . it is very important to have a good map with you.
